Before they arrive, the horses will be washed and braided and turned out in full formal harness. The manes will be braided with green and red “flags” that rise above a French braid along the crest of the neck, and the tails will be done up in a “Scotch knot.” The harness will be outfitted with sleigh bells, and the black harness itself will be polished and every brass buckle shined. “It takes all morning, but basically its just one big photo op,” Harmon said. Though this is the first time Harmon’s horses have been invited to deliver President Bush’s Christmas tree, the Belgians have actually worked the White House grounds once before. In June, two of Harmon’s teams provided carriage rides during the Congressional picnic for 1,500 senators, representatives and their families.
