The Town of Washington contracted the group to ensure that construction of the plant would not disturb any undiscovered historical sites in the town.
Dane Magoon, vice president of Cultural Resources Inc., presented an overview of the survey to Washington Town Council members at their Nov. 14 meeting.
He explained that Cultural Resources Inc. dug holes about a foot and a half deep every fifty feet at the site of the proposed plant and along where the pipes will be laid. The group found artifacts in 13 of the 85 holes dug, with most of the finds located off of Warren Avenue or behind the Rappahannock County Jail on Porter Street.
Magoon said two of the clusters might qualify as archaeological sites, and that he had recommended them to be registered with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.
‘There is a large scattering of artifacts,” Magoon said after the council's meeting.
He said, however, that the sites probably were not promising enough to warrant further investigation. Nonetheless, the town will not be allowed to disturb the
