mended that the council adopt the new ordinances, and the council then voted to repeal the old ordinances and enact the new ones.
Vice Mayor Jean Goodine, the only council member who opposed expanding the ordinances, took the opportunity to go on the record against the broad scope of the new rules.
“1 still have those reservations,” she said.
The council’s vote concludes a two-and-half-year effort to revise the historic district ordinances, which the town pursued after the rules were attacked in a 2003 lawsuit.
The town settled the suit for $75,000 and contracted attorney Henry Day and Cheryl Shepherd of Millennium Preservation Services to make revisions to the ordinances.
Council member Claudia Mitchell thanked the two for their work.
“We cannot say enough about Cheryl, Hank,” she said.
Artifacts uncovered
