That journey led Chandler to let his employees go. flee the rat race and take flight to Flint Hill where he founded the Spectra School at Sunny Slope Farm. Nestled within 65 acres of rolling rural countryside. Chandler envisioned ‘a space to experience creation through architecture.” Students were involved with all aspects of architecture from initial client contact, concept, design and actual construction.
By the mid 80s. Chandler had reopened an office in the McLean/Great Falls area but kept his ties to Rappahannock. Those ties got stronger when, in 1993, Chandler cheerfully admits he found and married, “the most wonderful woman in the world. Denise." Now. semiretired Chandler has an office on Gay Street in Washington where he is working on current projects with clients in Madison County. West Virginia and a vacation resort in Crete.
While Rappahannock County is graced with several of Chandlers artful' designs from residences to renovations, he has left his architectural legacy in Virginia. Maryland, the District of Columbia. North Carolina. South Carolina. Indiana, Georgia and California, to name a few.
“What does an architect do?." was an honest question that a young Donald Chandler asked his art teacher when he was in the 11th grade.
“An architect is someone who likes to draw and to build things." he was told.
Without his knowing, his teacher. Mrs. Jones, had submitted one of his sketches to a statewide competition. When it took first place, she sat him down and encouraged him to use his gift.
“She was interested in me as a person." remembered
