Historic district ordinances expanded
Members of the Washington Town Council appeared shocked at their meeting on Nov. 14 as they adopted a new set of historic district ordinances with no fanfare.
The new ordinances, which set historic preservation rules for the Town of Washington, require that almost all external changes to properties in the town receive an official sign-off from the town architectural review board. The previous version of the ordinances applied only to portions of property that can be seen from a public street, and council members expected that the expanded scope of the new rules would draw the ire of town residents.
When the council opened the floor to public comment, not a single person chimed in.
“Well, I guess there will be no further public comments,” Washington Mayor Eugene Leggett said.
With both the town council and the Washington Planning Commission in attendance, town officials outnumbered the surprisingly small audience by more than two to one.
