After the five-set battle, many Lady Panthers were left wondering, what if?
Rappahannock County squandered several opportunities to knock off Gate City. In the first four games, the Lady Panthers led by as many as three points in each game. They managed to hold on for victories in games two and four, but let games one and three slip from their grasp.
“It was disheartening to lose that first set,” RCHS Coach Scott Wilde said. ‘‘But we’ve done that all season long. Our girls gave a fantastic effort, but when you keep playing from behind you lose your energy. It’s tough to play from behind. We should have beat this team, but we dug ourselves a hole and had to keep battling back. If we win that first game, things are different.”
After the Panthers cut the lead to 22-21 in the opening game, the Blue Devils rattled off three straight points to win 25-21.
In game two, the Lady Panthers fell behind 8-2 before Coach Wilde called a timeout. Following the timeout, the Panthers went on a 10-1 run
