that had been displayed at an exhibit. Sure thing; I said.
Instead of delivering them to Nina right away, I set them up around my snug little cottage. Courting foxes adorned one side of the mantel, while another fin leapt for a quail on the other side. A third fin stalked the hencovered kitchen tablecloth, and yet another prepared to pounce on a rabbit.
Anytime my path crossed Eve’s that winter, we would (hat about Nina’s young eventers, particularly a nephew of Olympic medalist Three Magic Beans that Eve had purchased.
More recently, Eve Fout provided updates on PECs efforts to defeat Dominion Power’s desire to deface our area with 500-mega volt powerlines.
But, for all that, I still will always think of Eve Pout as a horseman first and foremost. My observation of Eve in this field came initially through steeplechasing at the side of her son Doug, then a leading jockey; and her late husband, Paul.
In supporting steeplechasing, and daughter Nina’s eventing, Eve’s support went beyond that of family. I came to associate Mr. and Mrs. Fout with racing at Glenwood Park, especially with the design and creation of the unique Alfred Hunt open steeplechase course.
Most of all, my admiration was based cm watching Eve ride, be it when she visited us hunting with the Old Dominion Hounds, or cm summer hunt trail rides.
She appeared to do nothing special — she sort of slouched in her shoulders, feet “home” in the stirrups, toes often as down as ' they0 were up, reins long with her hands mare or less in her lap. It looked like “nothing special” until you noticed her horses invariably looked happy, relaxed and willing; And beautifully behaved and impeccably turned out
Viewed from behind, I noted that her seat was absolutely riveted in the saddle and she was in perfect synch with her horse.
When fm an a difficult or nervous horse — and Eve made both types look easy — I think “Eve Fout Eve Fout. Sit like Eve Fbut”
Eve proved my point resoundingly and with certainty when she rode to win this fell’s North American Field Hunter Championships in a performance that will be lang-remembered.
Even more than the treasured stories that will be shared by those who knew her; I think Eve Foufs legacy will be carried on the ripples she set in motion, when she encouraged involvement in the world around her. Her presence will be felt for generations to come.
