Bob Czekaj wasn’t exactly sure how his team would respond following a 55-point loss to a big and athletic St. Paul’s of Maryland team in the opener of the Life & Breath Showcase Tournament held at Wakefield in the Plains.
It didn’t take long for Czekaj to find out his boys would be just fine.
The Panthers bounced back from their crushing defeat in dominating fashion as they defeated Tandem Friends School 54-37.
“The first team was just a much better team,” Czekaj said. “But in the second game, we showed patience and didn’t rush things. It was a big win, but I actually thought we could have beat them by more.”
The Panthers fell behind 82 in the first three minutes against Tandem, but went on a 21-4 run over the next 15 minutes to jump out to an 11-point lead. During the run, Travis Jenkins and Steve Dodson connected on three buckets apiece, while Chase Tupper nailed a big three-pointer and a layup. Dean Hogan also connected op a pair of jumpers over the final 15 minutes of the first half.
The Panthers led 23-12 in the final seconds of the first half, before Matt Mahoney cut the lead to 23-15 at the half with a three-pointer.
