the first time in years. I was only seven when he died and I don’t have many memories of him. But I remember his smell. If he had asked me if it was a good stink or a bad stink, I would have had to think about that for a while. The scent was good because it was his, someone I loved. But to be honest, the smell of my grandfather was not good. It was the scent of after shave, cigarettes, and alcohol - and I don’t mean rubbing alcohol. His wife, my grandmother, died in 1959 when she was 48 and he took it hard. So hard that he opted for a slow suicide, chain smoking and drinking far too much. His grief ended 45 years ago this week when he died at the age of 52.
I am thankful that my grandchildren will have memories of grandparents who “stink good.” Dear readers, I pray that your grandchildren remember the sweetness of your scent.
