WASHINGTON — Rep. John O. Marsh, Jr., has joined in urging Secretary of Labor, W. Willaxd Wirtz to give further consideration to the need of Virginia orchardists for adequate harvest labor. The 7th District Congressman pointed out that, while Vir ginia fruit growers were exert ing maximum efforts to recruit sufficient domestic laboi; it was clear that not enough qualified pickers could be drawn to the orchards from domestic sources, and that there would be a need to supplement them by experienced temporary workers from the Bahamas or elsewhere, if this year’s Virginia orchard crops were to be harvested in good condition. In urging Secretary Wirtz to use his authority to permit importation of sufficient additional workers, Marsh pointed out that it was not a question of wage rates, as one of having on hand in the orchards, at the proper time, sufficient qualified pickerp. He wrote Wirtz, in part: "Based on the experience of recent years, and on preliminary but solid indications so far this year, it appears evident that broad and intensive recruitment efforts in the domestic labor force will not produce sufficient harvest labor, including means of providing for the attrition which has occurred during the harvest period in the past among relatively inexperienced domestic labor, many of whom remain in the orchards only for brief periods and then drift away.
