If a farmer decides to become a certified seed producer, he should plant either Foundation or Registered seed --and should save the tags from the seed planted. Before planting, the drill or planter must be thoroughly cleaned so there will be no possible chance of a mixture in the crop. The next step is to apply to the Virginia Crop Improvement Association, Blacksburg Virginia, for field inspection for certification. One of the certification tags from each lot of seed planted should be enclosed with the application for inspecgion. After the crop begins to head up, the grower should carefully inspect the field to see if it contains any other crop mixture--such as rye in a field ttf wheat,, barley or oats. If so, the rye should be pulled and removed from the field before the VC IA inspector makes the official field inspection.
Before harvesting a crop grown for certified seed, the combine must be thoroughly cleaned. Fven after thoroughly cleaning the combine it is best to lay aside the first few bags of grain to be used for feed -- as an extra precaution against getting varietal mixture or other crop mixture in your certified seed, from the com bine.
