The Weather Bureau isn’t playing games in giving hurricanes girls' names; it has a serious purpose.
Use of short, easily remembered names helps to avoi&> errors in the transmission of vital information between widely scattered stations, ships at sea, and hurricanehunting planes that fly into the center of the storms, the National Georgraphic Society says. The names reduce confusion when two or more tropical cyclones occur at the same time. In 1950, for example, four unnamed hurricanes simultaneously whirled across j the Gulf of Mexico, the Carib bean Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean. Warnings about one storm were mistaken for another hundreds of miles away. Storm Called Alice To avoid this kind of misunderstanding, hurricanes in the three areas were designa ted by a phonetic alphabet ( Able, Baker, Charlie, etc.)
