Mrs. Joseph Scherschel noted that 61 per cent of the county school budget is paid with local taxes. “This puts Rappahannock right up there with everyone else in terms of dollar effort,” she said, adding that the county received a relatively low percentage of federal and state funds compared to other similar counties.
The discrepancy comes in, she maintained, when Rappahannock’s ability to pay for education, as determined by the state, is considered. Out of 95 Virginia Counties, Rappahannock is ranked fifth in that category.
