Most toilets use more water than necessary. Place a water-filled plastic soap bottle in the tank to displace some of the water.
Most shower heads use water at a rate of between five and 10 gallons per minute. Use a kitchen timer to limit showers to four minutes.
Install a flow-control insert in each shower head. Hardware stores have them for less than $1.
For tub baths, fill only one-quarter full.
Plug the drain in tubs and sinks before adjusting water temperature.
Turn off water while brushing teeth or shaving.
In The Kitchen
Most of the 80 gallons of water each of us use per day in the home is used in the bathroom. Kitchen operations rank second. These recommendations are offered.
—Avoid running the tap for cooler drinking water by keeping cold water in the refrigerator.
—Run automatic dishwashers only when full. They claim the most water in the kitchen, about IS gallons per run.
—When buying an automatic dishwasher, buy a water saving model.
—Don’t use running water to pre-rinse dishes.
—If you are the dishwasher, avoid using running water also. Use one sink-full of water to wash and one of clear water to rinse.
