Extension Agent CHILDREN AND TELEVISION

We all know that too much or the wrong kind of television viewing is harmful to children. Because many of us live too far from neighbors for our children to have constant playmates, we have a tendency to let the television become a playmate. As parents we can do two things to see that our children are not harmed by excessive television viewing.

We can write sensible, clear letters to local station managers and send copies to the networks, sponsors, the press and our congressmen. Commend what is good, complain about what is bad and offer constructive suggestions for improvement.

We can limit the viewing of television, both as to which programs are watched and the length of time spent watching. Parents can help schoolage children learn to be discriminating viewers. Watch television with your children and comment on what you see. Parents should assume responsibility for the television programs that come into their homes.
