Tests have shown that if the windbreak reduces the wind from 12 to 3 miles per hour at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, it will take only half the amount of fuel to heat the house. In other tests, the use of trees and shrubs as windbreaks accounted for a saving of 10 per cent in fuel bills over the entire winter.
Tall needle evergreens suitable for a windbreak include white pines, hemlock, and spruce. A cluster type planting or a staggered double row is more effective than a single row.
On hot summer days trees are nature’s air conditioners and can reduce the expensive energy a mechanical air conditioner must consume. Shade trees should be planted on the south and west sides of a building to do the best job of cooling. Decidious shade trees come into leaf in late spring when the da'ly temperature begins to climb. All summer long they intercept and absorb the sun’s heat at the same time transpiring cooling water. Thus, properly shaded houses have little need for costly air conditioning.
In the spring, fall and winter the trees shading the house will not interfer with the sun which at that time sets in the southwest. Moreover by use of trees which shed their leaves the sun will be certain to shine on the property during the cold season when the house needs all of the natural warmth it can get.
