To the editor: Today I paid $200 to rent a facility in an adjoining county so my husband and I could give our oldest daughter a wedding reception using a band for music and dancing.
Sure our community has adequate facilities and, yes, we would be happy to see our money being spent to help defray operating costs of the social hall built with public donations. I refer to the Amissville Volunteer Fire Department.
But—it seems the Board of Directors have some strange rules that apply to the social hall.
Only the fire department can have a band play for any function. They say we could rent the hall for a reception, and we could use a record player for dance music.
Now isn’t that an intelligent rule?
When we lived in another community more than ten years ago the Fire Department's social hall was the focal point of the community. It was used for dances, showers; fashion shows, receptions, sweet sixteen parties, most anything you could think of. As long as the money was paid the building was available.
