Preparations are going forward at full speed for the 29th running of the Rappahannock point-to-point races on Saturday, March 4 at Thornton Hill Farm 2 miles south of Sperryville on Route 522. This colorful event opens with a “pairs race" against the clock at 11:00 a.m. and ends with the traditional foxhound race over the beautiful Rappahannock course.
In an effort to make the races even more popular for spectators and participants, this year’s event will highlight the presentation of trophies — the brief ceremonies that culminate the horses’ and riders’ effort and focus the crowd’s attention on the winners.
Important as they are to the tradition and spectacle of point-to-point racing, trophy presentations often receive inadequate attention by being, in a sense, “lost in the crowd.” To give the awards ceremonies their proper place, the Rappahannock trophies will be present
