They use as the excuse for not allowing a band “possible damage.’’ Have they ever heard of people putting up a sum of money as a damage bond? Another excuse is "no control, fights might break out.” In my many years I’ve never been to a wedding reception where there were any fights.
Another sore point with me is not having a set of guidelines made public, or rates published to inform the people of the community. I’ve heard different people get quoted different prices.
Their public relations team better get busy. The public is not responding as they once did, and it is mostly caused by bad manners. It was over a year ago when the board of directors was supposed to meet and reconsider our request to use the hall for a reception that included band music. If they ever met, I don’t know. They certainly never had the courtesy to notify us of their decision.
Another family asked to use the hall for a reception with much the same plans as we. Possibly because they were black, they were never told anything. Something like “ignore them, they’ll get the message.’’ Many hands helped build that place, both black and white.
Possibly some good public relations could help ease the strain. I think that when the social hall becomes available to all groups in the community, and stops being a4 “private social club” for a select group, things would greatly improve.
They might just see a decent carnival again.
