A dramatic highlight of the Program Review Guide is a comparison of the three commercial networks’ responses to the National PTA's demands for better quality TV shows and less violence. Framework for these responses was the sixmonth period between July 1, 1977, and January 1, 1978, during which the PTA put the networks “on probation" to improve TV programming, and launched its national monitoring effort.
BEST RATED NETWORK IS CBS, which placed first for the greatest number of programs in the top 20 shows of best overall quality. (In the top 10 shows, CBS tied with NBC at four shows each.) CBS earned a strong first place for the greatest number <of programs in the “least violent” category, and was also deemed most cooperative in meeting with the PTA, and seriously considering its concerns.
