Rappahanock can expect approximately $17,000 in federal payments in lieu of taxes on natinal park land, according to a release from Congressman J. Kenneth Robinson. The amount is almost three times as much as the $6,803 the county received under the “in lieu” program last year.
Robinson was a sponsor of legislation which cleared Congress in 1978 to correct a legal technicality that affected “in lieu” payments. Last year, localities were denied payment for acreage acquired by the State of Virginia for transfer to the federal government in the creation of Shenandoah
