:omplex is dedicated to the ‘holy mother,” presumably the mother of a particular nobleman of the Sung dynasty about 960 A.D. She is shown sitting in buddah fashion, dressed all in white. Surrounding her are 40 other statues, presumably her ladies in waiting. Each statue is so individualistic that one feels it’s possible to read their characters and personalities. Upon our arrival, we asked to see some sort of factory or work facility. It was quickly arranged for us to visit a lacquer factory where chests, tables, screens and pictures painted on glass are made from start to finish. One of our group is a professor of industrial relations and she had many searching questions to ask.
Many of the employees of this factory are skilled artists who form and assemble scenes of persons, flowers, animals and buildings on the surface of lacquer furniture. We were shown each process and told how three old masters of this art make the designs and teach the younger workers.
We watched as gold leaf was rubbed into lines drawn in the lacquer surface and paint applied to the goldfilled lines and ivory faces of people in the scenes. The care and skill required to do this work was obvious and it appeared that the workers, men and women, were appreciative and supportive of one another. We took some Polaroid pictures of them as presents and they were delighted. As we departed, factory workers appeared on balconies of the several stories high building to wave friendly good-byes.
