I opera, however, are appropriate to communist ideology. Taiyuan is a city of over a million people. It looks entirely shabby and poor. There are no signs of metropolitan development as we know it. Tickets to performances such as we saw at the opera are available at one’s place of work and presumably distributed in a fair way among the workers.

While there seemed to be only one plane at the Peking airport when we arrived late at night on March 13, there are 15 airplanes of one sort or another in sight as we prepare to depart Taiyuan on Tuesday morning. I presume they must be military for the most part. Their design is not new.

In Peking, there was evidence of many military personnel, some employees at civilian tasks, other possibly in transit and some new recruits.

Nothing has been said to us about the war with Viet Nam. In fact, we feel pretty isolated from all news. We have been told that English speaking residents can listen to a Voice of America news broadcast everyday. (Next week: A Visit to China’s Farms)
