(Diana and Lee Bird of Horse Shoe Hollow Farm, Washington, left on March 10 for a trip to the People’s Republic of China. Mrs. Bird agreed to keep a journal of her travels and share her impressions of the land with her Rappahannock neighbors. The following account, part one, is dated March 19 and was written after less than a week in China.)
What can one report that counts after less than a week in China? The U. S.-Chinese People’s Friendship Association tour of which we are members is taking us from Peking south to Kun Ming near the southwest border and then across to Clanton where we will leave on March 29. |My instinct is to report the small and particular in order to convey something reliable. But I must confess that the more we question and learn, the more uncertain we are that the questions we ask are understood.
First thing this morning, we went to the provincial hospital. There are probably other hospitals in Peking—people report there at least six more. The provincial hospital was built about 1956.
