A Night At The Opera On the evening of our arrival in Taiyuan, we attended an opera called “The Dumb Girl and the Spring.” This musical production of a Chinese folk tale has a handsome cast dressed in dazzling, colorful costumes. The basic story: a community is in need of water. In the past, their spring was seized by a monster who prevents their using it. The community decides to challenge the monster. A hunter and a young girl attempt to steal a magic needle from the monster and uncover the well. A fairy godfather appears who encourages them but informs the girl that if she is successful, she will be struck dumb and blind. She struggles over the decision to sacrifice herself for the benefit of the community, resolves to keep her secret and finds the spring. In the end, her sight is restored but she remains dumb. Despite her handicap, the brave and handsome hunter is happy to marry her.
I won’t comment on the story line but it is new for opera to treat such a subject which refers not once to society as it is constituted today. The sentiments of the
