Once he made up his mind to make Rappahannock his home, Merrill built the stone house at the edge of town in 1935. His daughter Marilyn Bailey lives there now. i

Mrs. Bailey confirmed that running the motor company has been a full-time job and then some with the entire family involved. She recalled that she spent “as much time there as I was allowed to,” helping with the books, pumping gas and checking oil.

Cars, sales and service have always been a big part of the family’s life. ‘‘We never had a regular mealtime schedule. Daddy would run home from the garage to eat and then rush back,” she said.
