TIPS ON DYEING EGGS AND EGGSHELLS
1. To dean eggs wash them in cold tap water. Do not use a detergent, soap or cleanser.
2. IMPORTANT! For beat results, boil not only hardcooked eggs, but boil blownand-rinsed eggshells before dyeing them. (Be sure to use enamel, glass or stainless steel pans, not aluminum, 'iron, etc.) Most eggs today have been washed with a detergent, rinsed in a sanitizing solution, and coated with an oil-base spray, all of which are invisible but protective to the eggs. These solutions, however, tend to make the dyeing of eggs with pure food colors more difficult. Boiling the eggs and the blown eggshells will often counteract the effects of these solutions.
3. ALSO IMPORTANT! For better dyed eggs it's often necessary to use more vinegar than called for in dyeing directions. This helps cut through the oil-base-spray coating mentioned above in paragraph No. 2.
4. To blow an egg: Make a hole about the size of a small pea in each end of the egg with sharp-pointed skewers, old-fashioned ice pick or manicure scissors, being sure to puncture inner membrane of egg. Blow through one end of egg until contents are emptied into a bowl. Be sure not to have on lipstick! If blowing is difficult, enlarge hole. Rinse well inside and out.
5. To rinse blown eggshells fill the shell with cold tap water, shake eggshells vigorously, then blow water from shell. If necessary, repeat. (This is to make sure all the albumen is rinsed away; should any of it be left it will not only cause the shell to have a “spoiled egg odor” but will mix with the dye bath causing an uneven dye job.) 6. To cut eggshells: Draw light lines where you want to cut. Hold manicure scissors with narrow points curved ^toward you. Cut far edge of .eggshell counterclockwise.
