“I’m not criticizing you,” Gardiner assured the two applicants. "I’m just trying to get to the bottom of this. I don’t think Eddie Sutphin was forthright in his approach or in his statements made at the meeting (last fall),” Gardiner added. He acknowledged later, however, that both men had indicated they’d planned to eventually buy the car lot and return to the county as full-time residents.
Two landowners with property overlooking the used car lot, spoke against issuance of the special use permit. Both maintained that approval could set a precedent for further commercialization along Route 211.
‘‘I moved to Rappahannock because I felt the county would retain its rural character and not be highly commercialized or industrialized,” said Paul Frantz. He added that the used car lot would create an eyesore, spoiling scenic vistas in the area.
