Jnx or seven ot our group have fallen ill, I among them. The train from Peking to Taiyuan was dirty and the atmosphere in both cities dusty. One is constantly going from heated hotel rooms and buses to cold buildings so that dressing appropriately is virtually impossible.
1 was persuaded to see a doctor at noon today. Two female doctors manage an office in the hotel for several hours at the middle of the day and visit patients in mornings and evenings. An interpreter asked me what was wrong. I said just a cold and acknowledged that probably nothing could be done to cure me.

I was handed a thermometer to put under my arm for five minutes. It registered only a slight fever. My throat and tongue were examined, my pulse taken and my chest listened to with a stethescope in several places.
1 was given a shot—administered in the traditional part of the anatomy—of some sort of brown liquid taken from two glass vials, handed six envelopes of various sorts of pills to take for two days, ordered to bed and instructed to drink more water and wear warmer clothes.
How crestfallen I feel at missing a visit to a middle school—really a junior and senior high school—which was arranged only yesterday at our request. Because I was once a teacher, I had even been designated to express the thanks of our group and present gifts to the school.
