The Special Olympics for Area XVII will be held this Saturday, April 21, at Culpeper Junior High School en North Main Street in Culpeper. The games, part of the world’s largest program of sports training and competition for the mentally retarded, will begin at 9 a.m. Rappahannock schools will be represented by a contingent of 11 or 12 Special Olympian's under the supervision of elementary teachers Donna Gordeuk and Elizabeth Coffey.
For the special Olympics athlete, participation in the area games is the result of hundreds of hours of training and preparation. And no matter where the Special Olympian places in a contest, he or she will not lose. There are no losers in Special Olympic competition—every athlete gets a ribbon and
