miles between Taiyuan and Sian, we flew over mountains, with tops leveled and sides terraced to resemble a contour map.
Here in Sian, the land is flat near the junction of the Yellow River and its tributaries. Some of the soil is "loess”—yellow earth laid down by the wind over thousands of years. This material, sticky when wet, has been worked and cut into terraces everywhere. Occasionally, a tree stands as a reminder of what the land looked like at some former time.
Lee and I are the only members of our group interested in farming. This probably accounts for the fact that to date we have not visited an agricultural commune or even been allowed to stop and examine or photograph agricultural enterprises. It is inevitable that on a venture such as this one, serious disappointments occur.
