Cost Versus
To the editor:
“We have to weigh costs vs. compassion,” one Supervisor said at last week’s school budget hearing. “There must be some lower limit we can just stay above in order to stay accredited.” The Supervisors are insensitive to County children’s needs. They are focusing on one goal, maintaining a budget at skin and bones level to avoid a tax increase, and in order to stay focused they are shutting out understanding of children’s needs. That’s easier to do when you are removed from a situation. When your own children are ill and need care, you take them to a doctor knowing you will scrounge up the money somehow. If your resources are limited enough you may gamble awhile or settle for partial treatment. Although you may be tempted to shut your eyes, you try your best to give your child what he needs to develop, to be healthy^ despite the cost of sacrifice.
It is up to mothers and fathers, with help from educators, to insist that your children get what they need. Remember that someone else
