sweetness is intensified in the bulb. The fall crop seed will be started about two months before hard ground freezing is expected to occur.
For spring crops, seed may be sown moderately early in the same season as you would seed carrots in your area. A last note on Grand Duke hybrid kohlrabi: The small inner leaves about the bulbs are reported to have a flavor similar to kale or collards and are very nutritious.
New Snow Pea Variety - The second unusual vegetable in the AAS list for 1979 is the edible podded snap pea called Sugar Snap. Market gardeners and roadside operators who sell snow peas for stir frying or steaming will also find their customers pleased with Sugar Snap. Sugar Snap was tested at Blacksburg in 1978 and found to be crisp, sweet and very succulent and remains in prime eating condition for several days.
Sugar Snap does have a distinct appearance and flavor. The round pods have very thick walls and can be eaten at full mature sizes when the pods are up to 3 inches in length. However, the mature pods do require stringing. This is easily accomplished while snapping the pods into bitesize pieces. Both top and bottom strings can be zipped off with one continuous motion.
Supports Recommended - Vines are tall and need supports. Where cool growing conditions encourage vine growth, plants may reach a height of 6 ft. or more. Probably for most of Virginia. 4 ft. will be the average height for spring planted crops, with about 70 days to maturity from seeding in the field. As with any peas, early plantings are the most productive. The Sugar Snap variety has been reported to withstand frost and freezes down to about 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
Unlike the more common varieties of peas. Sugar Snap should not be over cooked. Lightly steam or quickly stir fry in oil to retain the crispness. Over cooking will definitely make pods come apart. For tfff£>iT?ason, they cannot be canned.
They are very easy to freeze, but the high temperatures in canning also destroy the pods.
