Folks who like sports and kids but who stay away from the Special Olympics because they’re afraid that watching the mentally retarded compete will prove depressing should reassess their ideas. Special Olympians are not sad—at least not any sadder than^any other kid who doesn’t cross the finish line first or jump high enough to win the blue ribbon.
