Folks who like sports and kids but who stay away from the Special Olympics because they’re afraid that watching the mentally retarded compete will prove depressing should reassess their ideas. Special Olympians are not sad—at least not any sadder than^any other kid who doesn’t cross the finish line first or jump high enough to win the blue ribbon.
Competition is of a high order in many of the events. Most of the youngsters who participate have worked their hearts out training for this one big day when they can grab a share of the lime light. They appreciate cheering fans on the side lines as much or more than normal
