Up against mountains not far from the archeological excavation site, hot springs were discovered over 3,000 years ago. When Sian was China’s capital, during some of the most opulent dynasties, these hot springs were the private recreational preserves of the emperors and their courts. Today, the springs are a community resource and besides casual visitors, we saw lines of people waiting patiently for their turns to take baths.
It was here at the hot springs that Chiang Kai-Shek had his headquarters at one time during the war against Japan and it was here that he was captured by the Communists.
