Through a program sponsored by the Virginia Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, fire and rescue squads from Amissville, Sperryville, Washington and Flint Hill will receive sets of Military Anti-Shock Trousers (MAST). Funds to purchase this equipment were awarded to the state by the Federal Highway and Transportation Safety Administration.
The MAST devices were first used by the military for emergency treatment of wounded and have also proved beneficial in rescue squad work. When properly used, the inflatable trouserlike garments help sustain the life of an accident victim by moving blood to parts of the body where it is most critically needed.
