(Continued from Page 4) his wife Sharon would be available to assist with routine legal matters in an emergency situation or should Luke be out of the county. “As for precedent, look to any other county in Virginia,” Luke said, noting that non-elected assistants inthe commonwealth attorney’s office do much of the legal work in other counties.
"She’s not hired for it,” East ham countered.
“But she’s not getting paid for it either,” Luke answered. If Luke is elected, his wife will be barred from taking criminal cases in Rappahannock under Virginia Bar Association regulations, she may become the only lawyer in the county not handling criminal cases here and possibly the only lawyer available to take over any duties of the commonwealth attorney’s office without a potential conflict of interest. “Or the county could hire someone from outside,” Luke added. He stipulated, however, that he would remain in Rappahannock the majority of the time if elected commonwealth attorney so the possibilites of his wife assuming any duties would be remote.

Rappahannock game warden Jim Bankston asked the two candidates for commonwealth attorney if they would favor a local ordinance requiring rifles and shotguns to be either dismantled or eased in motor vehicles on public roads.
