Many Rappahannock citizens may be surprised to learn that a group home serving mentally retarded adults has been in operation since 1974 in Culpeper. The Goldsborough House, although located in Culpeper at 401 East Piedmont Street, is open for residence to mentally retarded adults who live in the counties of Culpeper, Orange, Madison, Rappahannock, and Fauquier.
Operated by the Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services BoardMental Retardation Services, the Goldsborough House offers a home-like setting for individuals who need to acquire additional social and living skills before moving into the community mainstream. As persons reach a certain level of maturity, they may need to “cut loose” from parental ties and become more independent. This same need for independance is common to mentally retarded persons. The Goldsborough House provides them this opportunity while still offering the necessary protection and supervision.
Skills that are -taught to the residents include: shopping, banking telling time, cooking, cooperating with others, maintaining good hygiene habits, communicating effectively, etc. The overall goal of the House is to help individuals become as independent and productive as possible.
The Goldsborougji House is a transitional facility; most residents live at the group home for six to 18 months depending upon individual needs. During this time, the residents are required to participate in daytime activity such a competitive
