When the dairy business became too costly because of labor, beef cattle and swine were added and the labor was done by family participation. The two Thornhill sons, C. G. and David had been active in 4-H and had many champion swine in area shows.
The use of pastures was intensified and a program of stockpiling fescue in late summer and early fall was initiated. One cutting of hay is produced from a pasture then the animals are turned into the pasture in late October and remain until late April. Usually only small amounts of hay are needed for these cows.
Since the younger son, David, has returned to the farm, the Thornhills have expanded their operation and leased a 900 acre farm. The cow herd will be tripled in the next five years and the production of swine increased to 2000 per year.
