McDaniel entered the Naval Aviation Cadet program in 1955 and was commissioned an ensign. He served in different facets of the Naval Air Force until 1967 when he was shot down on his 81st combat mission over North Vietnam. After the cease-fire in Vietnam, McDaniel was released on March 4, 1973.
He continued with his Navy career and in 1977 he assumed command of USS Lexington. In January of this year McDaniel became House Liaison Director in the U. S. House of Representatives.
