Baumgardner also said he would work closely with law enforcement agencies, particularly the sheriff’s department, to improve the criminal justice system. “I would make myself available on a regular basis...to give advice on any subject.”
In the area of the commonwealth attorney’s responsibility to act as legal advisor to the county, Baumgardner said he would base his opinions “exclusively on the law and the facts.”
Drug Law Enforcement
Robert Eastham, member of the Rappahannock School Board, asked the candidates, if they would use the full resources of the commonwealth attorney’s office to enforce drug laws. He maintained that the use of illegal drugs has increased dramatically, especially in the last three years. Noting that the county spends 75 percent of its tax dollars on schools, Eastham claimed that “a large part of that money will be going down a rat hole” if the drug traffic into the schools isn’t stopped.
"I pledge myself unequivically to enforcing not only the drug laws but all the laws of the state,” Luke responded. He added, however, that he didn’t think there was “a drug epidemic” sweeping Rappahannock's public schools.
“When we use the term ‘drugs’ I would include alcohol as a drug,” Luke continued. “I think it might be a bigger problem.”
If sufficient evidence exists, Luke promised to follow through on all drug cases to the best of his ability to see a conviction. “That goes without saying. Laws are to be enforced as written,” he said.
