J. P. Mills, Jr., the department’s traffic and safety engineer, again attributed the travel decline to rising fuel prices, increasing use of smaller and more fuelefficient automobiles, spot gasoline shortages, and conservation efforts.
Passenger car travel showed a decrease of 3.1 per cent, with out-of-state cars registering a 12.8 per cent decline from September, 1978. Mills said data also indicated that weekend travel in the state dropped 3.6 below September of last year.
The report was based on vehicle counts made at some 200 locations on interstate, arterial, and primary highways, according to Mills.
