Incumbent State Senator Nathan Miller is seeking reelection to the seat he has held since 1975. Prior to his term as State Senator, the Republican candidate served two terms in the Virginia House of Delegates as a representative from the 16th District.
Miller, a native of Rockingham County, earned a law degree in 1969 from the T. C. Williams School of Law of the University of Richmond. He is currently a partner in the Harrisonburg law firm of Conrad, Litten, Sipe and Miller.
Miller supports limited government, a sound fiscal policy for Virginia and a balanced budget. He is an opponent of the Equal Rights Amendment and collective bargaining by public employees. Miller has said that he is favorably inclined towards removing the present sales tax from food and nonprescription drugs if an alternative means of securing revenue can be found.
W. E. “Ernie” Schlabach, Democratic challenger for Miller’s Senate seat, sees himself as representing the “regular, average person out there trying to make a living.” Schlabach’s work experience includes a stint as janitor in a hospital when he was only 14 years old. He’s also been a painter, school teacher, relief driver for Frito-Lay, farm worker and employee in a laundry. “I know how the average working man exists,” said Schlabach.
A graduate of Eastern Mennonite College, he attended the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee, and has maintained an optometry practice in Harrisonburg since 1969.
