To the editor:
I learn with sorrow, but no surprise, that the ski area real estate has been placed on the market. Though there is still a remote hope that the area might be reopened for skiing, this appears to be quite unlikely.
As so often happens, we could not get the various parts of the act together at one time. When Camelback and Pico Peak had an agreement for a joint venture the zoning was in a tangle. By the time the Board of Supervisors cleared up the zoning, Pico Peak had lost interest. Roundtop then got interested, but their interest was subject to a much larger plan which, though excellent in concept, is terribly expensive. The various adverse events in the interest and energy areas this year appear to be too difficult to overcome.
Whether this is a good or bad result for Camelback from a financial standpoint will never be known. From an emotional standpoint, I am certainly unhappy at the result. I truly believe this area could be one of the nicest in the East, and it would have been an interesting combination of fun and headaches to reopen it. I also cpntinue to think it would have been a gieat benefit to the citizens of Rappahannock County.
