In next Tuesday s elections, the Rappahannock News endorses George Beard for delegate and William A. Buntin for sheriff because we’re satisified with their performances.
W illiam A. Buntin
There a few county sheriffs throughout the state more qualified for the job than Buntin. He served with distinction in the V irginia State Police for 20 years, his entire tour of duty spent in Rappahannock.
He knows the law enforcement problems faced by the countv and he has the training to deal with the problems. His record over the past three and a half years as sheriff demonstrates his competence in law enforcement.
According to the 1978 edition of '"Crime in Virginia.” compiled by the Uniform Crime Reporting Section of the Department of State Police. Rappahannock has one of the lowest crime rates in the area with 1 7.60 “part one or serious offenses committed per 1.000 population. By comparison. Orange County has 25.13 offenses per 1.000 population. Culpeper 21.81 and W arren 44.70.
Buntin has acknowledged that follow-up investigations on breaking and enterings need attention. W ith the hiring of an additional deputy in July. Buntin now has more staff to devote more time to investigations. It's too early to tell if the new man has made a difference in improving the rate of offenses solved and cleared from the books. The state crime report print-out is done on a six months basis with the figures for July through December not scheduled to be released until after the first of the year. Buntin. predicts the cleared rate will improve and we trust his judgement. The hiring of the new deputy brought the staff of the sheriff’s department up to the number approved by the State Board of Compensation for salary reimbursement. Even with an understaffed department, however. Buntin made gains in the investigation of breaking and entertainings.
