Noting that he and Allen Stokes had “directly intervened” to get information on the boiler problems, Eastham read from a prepared statement on his version of the events of Wednesday and Thursday.
He began by noting that his “internal report” to school board members only circulated after his 13 days in class last January cited the boiler rooms at both schools as operated on “hope and prayer.” In his report, dated January 30, Eastham said he called for implementation of inspection and maintenance programs for both heating systems without delay.
Eastham said he’d learned of the most recent problems with the boiler from a parent who visited him on Thursday and told him a high pressure steam blow-out had been narrowly averted and students evacuated from school the previous day. According to Eastham, he then went to see Gatterbuck only to find that the electrician had been called back to the high school.
