been the maintenance supervisor proposed by superintendent Bloomer. That position, however, was cut by the same school board that last week voted $7,000 for an expert consultant to help determine the school’s educational philosophy, curriculum requirements and capital outlay needs.

This same board exercised special care to protect its members by voting $5,000 to pay their expert on school law when legal services are available at no cost from Rappahannock’s commonwealth attorney.

This same board was caught with egg on its collective face last year, when, after being repeatedly warned, they refused to allow a cushion in the budget for anticipated gasoline price increases. This year, while cutting the maintenance superivosr from the budget, they went overboard in the other direction on gas, providing for hikes to $2 per gallon while all the surrounding systems are betting on a $1.50 maximum with the average allocation based on approximately $1.35.

This same board took all the time in the world to remedy other potentially hazardous conditions at the county schools. Weeks stretched into months and even years before action was taken to repair the school zone warning lights in front of RCHS and to put the fire alarm systems at both schools back into working order acceptable by the fire marshals.
