Robert Eastham attacks the right of the people to have their representatives choose the school board by raising the red flag of higher taxes. The fact is that passage of the referendum will do no such thing, and Mr^ Eastham knows it. Passage of the referendum will have no effect, one way or the other, on taxes.
Whether one is in favor of more spending for schools or less spending, one ought to vote in favor of the referendum. If it passes, the school board will be elected by the people’s representatives on the board of supervisors. This will give the people greater control over who sits on the school board, and the board will then be more responsive to the people of Rappahannock County. This has nothing to do with whether the board of supervisors will raise the tax rate or not.
The only public officials who speak out against the right of the people to choose are those who distrust the people.

To the editor:
I am surprised at the figures used in the school space report. The supposed state minimum of IS square feet per student is ridiculous. Using that figure, a room 15 feet by 20 feet could be used to teach 20 students. Try putting 20 teenagers, 20 desks, a teacher, a teacher’s desk, and teaching material in a room the size of an average living room. Admittedly our schools do not have this level of crowding, however, to cite this figure as a minimum is laughable.
