Lastnam arrived at the high school last Thursday after the second boiler emergency had been resolved, pressure in the unit brought back down near normal and students returned to their classes. Rumors flying around Flint Hill give him the credit for saving Rappahannock’s children from serious injury. This is not the case. By the time he reached the scene, any potential crisis was over and done with.
We’re not questioning his stated concern over the safety of the students in the county’s public schools. But he certainly has a funny way of showing it. The interests of the youngsters will be better served, not by a fire marshal’s investigation of the events of May 7 and 8, but by efforts to make sure the emergency doesn’t repeat itself.
Along this line, Dr. Bloomer had the right idea when he relayed the statecertified boiler inspector’s offer to teach school employees responsible for the boiler how to operate the unit correctly and safely. We hope the school board elects to take him up on his offer. An ounce of prevention is worth pounds of cure, or in this case, blame.
