Marmasett’s record of only a single win in her racing career was less impressive. But on the basis of the mare’s looks and breeding—"She’s really high bred. Her grandfather was a Derby horse.”—Mrs. Cebula plunked down the cash.
She hasn’t regretted her investment. She bought Marmasett on January 8. A few weeks later, the mare had her first win under Millie’s regular jockey Hector Del Gada and the Cebula colors. She returned S18.20 on a $2 bet—not bad for a start.
Marmasett worked her way up, running and winning in 52,500, 53,500 and 54,500 claiming races, proving that her first victory wasn’t a fluke. “1 didn’t want her claimed so 1 put her in an allowance race, the highest you can go at Charles Town,” Millie said.
Undaunted by tougher competition, Marmasett breezed to an upset win beating a 540,000 blue-blood in the process, according to Mrs. Cebula.
The mare’s style, however, can add a few gray hairs to the heads of even her strongest supporters. “Marmasett runs 20 lengths •>.behind until she hits the back stretch,” Millie reported. “She can run a mile and a half easy. She’s a mile and a half horse. You can’t stop her. It just takes a little bit for her to get started.”
